Snow had shut the pass for three days, and the Crooked Hart had run out of everything but tinned peaches and patience. Marta Quayle stood at the kitchen window with a tea towel over one shoulder, watching drift climb the wall of the coal store. On the dresser behind her sat a magnolia branch in a jam jar. Mr Greave, the surveyor, had left it there in October, wrapped in a county paper, and had never come back for it.

Two blooms were still closed, their leaves hatched in fine diagonal lines like the shadow of a fence, the buds tight as knuckles. Marta changed the water every morning out of habit, sliding the branch aside to rinse the jar, and every morning the lower leaves looked more like cut paper. She had started talking to it. Nothing sensible. The weather, the price of flour, whether Greave had married the woman in Kendal.

On the third night the power failed and the inn went to candles. Marta carried the jar to the bar, where the lamplight caught the small triangles of stippled dots, and she saw that the bud nearest the glass had split along one seam. Only a pale crease, but a crease all the same. She sat on a stool and did not move until the clock over the door struck two.

At first light the plough came grinding up from the valley, and a man stamped snow from his boots in the doorway, asking whether anyone had seen a surveyor's case left behind in the autumn. Marta pointed without looking. "Tell him it's flowering," she said. "He'll want to see it before it goes."
