Two elephants in line outline on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image has two panels showing the same design: a larger elephant with its trunk reaching back to a smaller elephant walking behind it. The top panel shows the tattoo on skin, and the lower panel shows the stencil or transfer on the same area. The design uses thin, unshaded black outlines with no fill, set against plain skin on a close crop of the foot.

Gather in, closer, where the lamp can reach your faces. You've all heard about the old cow who walked the salt road from Mirdan to the sea, but you've never heard how her calf kept hold of her.

The road ran through a grey country with no shade in it, and the calf was no bigger than a rain barrel that first summer. Every morning the mother set off at a pace that would have left a camel gasping, and every morning the little one fell behind, bawling at the dust. So the mother did a thing no one else on that road had seen. She reached back without stopping, curled the very end of her trunk round the calf's own, and walked on, drawing the young one along like a bucket on a rope.
Forty days they went like that. Traders laughed at them from their carts. A boy with a goat asked the mother whether she had lost her wits, and she only swung her ears and kept walking. The calf learned the road through that gentle pull, the sway of the hips ahead, the heat coming off a broad back.
On the last morning the sea showed as a blue thread at the edge of the world, and the calf's trunk slipped loose in the dust. The mother stopped. She did not turn round. She simply waited, and after a while she felt the small trunk find her tail again and take hold. The rest of the road was theirs to finish, and it was a short one.
