Two pigs with Makin Bacon script
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of two pigs, one partly overlapping the other, drawn in outline with soft grey shading. The script words Makin Bacon sit across the body of the front pig. The image is a close, straight-on photograph of the skin with the design filling most of the frame.

The sign over the smokehouse at Thornwick Rise said MAKIN BACON in letters a foot high, and every pig in the Kingdom of Mirrowdale took it as a threat. My brother Bramble read it aloud each morning as though it were a proclamation from the crown, and each morning I told him to stop reading signs that were not addressed to us.

The King of Mirrowdale was a mild man who kept geese for company and had once been bitten by a goose called Sovereign. He decreed that the kingdom's pigs should be counted, weighed and excused from the autumn fair, which in Mirrowdale meant nothing at all. Bramble took this as a sign of royal favour. I took it as the start of something worse, and I was right to, though not in the way I imagined.
One grey afternoon we climbed the stile to inspect the smokehouse, Bramble leading and me carrying the swill bucket because someone had to. Mistress Ferrow was inside, scraping soot from a hook. She saw us peering through the gap in the boards and laughed until she had to sit down on a barrel. Makin Bacon, she said, was her late husband Ambrose Makin, who had made the finest rashers in the county and who had signed his name on everything, including the door, because he was proud of it and because nobody else could spell it.
We walked home slowly, the smoke going up over the hedges behind us. Bramble said that a name on a door was a very grand thing to have, and that he had decided to be painted with one. I told him that was the most foolish idea a pig had ever had, and then, because he looked so pleased, I agreed to be inked beside him, so that anyone who saw us would know which of us was the sensible one.
