Single-line bull on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms a bull with its head lowered and horns curving upwards, shown in profile with a raised tail. The linework is thin and even, with a few small dots shaded along the horn and ear, and the design is set against a plain pale background. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centrally on the inner upper arm.

Dear Tomas, The lorries have been backed up at Vrana Bridge since Tuesday, so the customs men have nothing to do but watch the river and argue about football. Yesterday a tinsmith from the far bank came to my window with a sketchbook he would not let go of, and I think you would have liked him, though he would have hated you for saying so.

He wanted to take his drawings across to a gallery in the city, so I asked to see them. Most were ordinary, a kettle, a gate, a dog asleep on a step. The last was a bull drawn in one line, head lowered, horns turned up at the ends, tail lifted like a question. He told me the trick was never to lift the pencil, because a lifted pencil is a lie about where the animal has been. I stamped his papers and held the page up to the lamp, and saw the line had doubled back at the shoulder, as if he had gone over a path twice.

I asked him why. He said the bull had grazed his father's field until the field was sold, and that the line had to return to the place it started or the animal would never get home. Then he took the sketchbook, thanked me, and walked into the queue with the rain on his collar.

I have kept the carbon copy of his form in my drawer. I have not told the officer in charge about the bull. Come to the bridge on Sunday if the barrier lifts, and bring that old pencil of Papa's. Don't lift it until you are across.
