Cartoon cow on a belly
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon cow with horns, a blue eye, a pink tongue and a curly tail is tattooed on skin around the navel. The cow has bold black outlines and black patches, with a grey-shaded bell on its collar and a pink udder. The cow fills the left of the frame, and the navel sits in the centre against a plain skin background.

Nobody warns you that a Friesian can get through a gate tied with baler twine, so when you come down the garden at six with a mug of tea and find Ruby standing in your gran's sweet peas, you assume you are still in bed. She turns her head slowly, the way cows do when they have made up their minds, and the brass bell on her collar gives one dull clank against the trellis. Her pink tongue hangs out the side of her mouth like a dropped scarf. She is chewing a runner bean with the air of a magistrate.

You try to herd her with the rake. She ignores the rake. You try bribing her with a windfall apple, which she accepts, then walks straight through the marrows as if they were a rumour she intends to disprove. Your gran always said nothing leaves this garden without being paid for, and it occurs to you that Ruby has been reading the same book. By the time the rhubarb is flattened and the water butt has been tipped over, the milk tanker is idling in the lane and Mr Pargeter is leaning on the gate, shaking his head at a rate that suggests he has been shaking it for years.
Ruby does not go home quietly. She goes home with a sunflower head stuck to one horn and a look of enormous contentment. That evening you find a bell-shaped dent in the compost heap and a single pink petal on your boot. You keep the spare bell from the shed on the kitchen windowsill, where the draught from the back door sets it ringing every so often, just enough to remind you who was here first.
