Pineapple tattoo on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pineapple with a spiky crown of leaves in yellow, green and blue, and a small bow-like motif near the top right. The pineapple body is filled with yellow and orange, and a circle with a multicoloured geometric pattern sits on its lower half, outlined with a dotted line. Bold black outlines define the forms, and the vivid colour dominates the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mabel Tranter had been told pineapples were bad luck, which is why she set one on the bandstand every Saturday, crown up, as a dare to the band. The Pavilion at Lowmoor smelled of damp wool and brass polish, and the mirror ball above the floor threw coloured diamonds across the dancers, orange and green and a rose pink that made the men's collars look grey.

The stranger came the summer the pier burned. He wore a yellow coat cut for a bigger man and asked for a dance with the fruit, not with her. She told him the pineapple was spoken for by the bandleader. He said it had been promised to whoever could keep time with a stopped clock, and he took a pocket watch from his coat with a bent hand. Mabel held it up to the ball's light and the hand swung true, though nobody had wound it.
They danced until the shadow of the ball had crossed the boards three times. Then he lifted the crown from the fruit, pressed the cut end into the damp soil of the planter by the stage, and said it would take a year to show anything. Mabel laughed at him for that too, but she watered it every evening after the lamps went down.
The next June a spiky green rosette stood on the windowsill, lit through by the evening sun, and the whole hall smelled sweet. Mabel still winds the watch each Saturday before the band starts. The ball turns, the crown keeps growing, and nobody in Lowmoor has ever asked her where the fruit came from.
