Fine line black tattoo of two hands reaching towards each other above a ring of small stars and dots, placed on the ankle.

Two reaching hands with stars on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two open hands, one from the upper left and one from the lower right, reaching towards a central ring of asterisk-shaped stars, crosses and dots. The linework is thin, even and solid black with no shading, so the design reads as a simple outline. It is shown on pale skin in a close, straight-on photograph with a dark background, and the design sits within a single frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Morag had been counting stars for the boats since the winter the fog stopped lifting off Skerrin. Her father had taught her the old way: a slate nailed to the cottage wall and a stub of chalk, one mark for every star the men could name from the harbour steps. The Gunn brothers could name eleven. Morag could name forty, and she never told them that she was making half of them up.

The night the Mary Ann failed to come in, she climbed to the headland with the slate under her coat. Her mother had always been the one who held the lantern steady over the rocks, and tonight Morag's fingers shook so badly she dropped the chalk twice. She drew a ring of crosses and asterisks anyway, then rubbed it out with her sleeve, because a ring was what you drew for the drowned.

She drew it again. This time she gave the ring two hands, one reaching in from the cliff edge and one rising out of the black water below, each palm open as if to take something that was being passed across. She set the lantern in the middle of the stars and sat down beside it to wait, the chalk dust grey on her knuckles.

Just before dawn a light answered from the sound, small and wavering, and then the Mary Ann came round the point trailing weed and a torn sail. Morag didn't rub out the drawing. She left the slate on the wall, and that spring the Gunn boys asked her to show them where the stars had gone.
