Galaxy heart pierced by an arrow

Other · Colour · Photo

A heart filled with a dark teal and black galaxy design, with pink nebula-like swirls and white starburst sparkles. A black-outlined arrow with white fletching pierces the heart diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. The bold outlines and soft blended shading sit on smooth, lightly textured skin, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the kettle's only just gone off. You'll want the true version, not the one the postcards tell. Right. Winter of the big storm, when the lifeboat men were still tying their boots at the Crown, there was a girl called Nell Garrow who could shoot a bolt over the harbour wall and hit a gull at forty yards. Her father had taught her with a longbow he'd carried off a wreck. Nobody thought much of it until she took aim at a star.

Her sweetheart, Tom Ashby, mended nets on the slip and had a habit of looking up whenever she spoke, as if she were the weather. He'd tell her the sky over Mersey Cove was a black cloth somebody had sprinkled with salt, and she'd laugh and say he was soft. One night she loosed an arrow at the brightest pin of light above the lamp, certain it would bring her luck. The arrow went up and up and came down without a sound, straight through the middle of his chest where the heart sits.

He didn't fall. He stood on the slip with the shaft standing out of him like a mast, and the night came pouring out of the wound, purple swirls and little silver sparks spilling across the cobbles, and then it settled. Where the blood should have been there was only sky, deep teal and bottomless, with pink clouds drifting through it like smoke from a far-off chimney.

Some say he still walks the cove. On clear nights the fishermen swear the sea below the harbour wall goes dark and speckled, with an arrow standing upright in the water, pointing back up to where it was fired. Pour yourself another, love, and don't go out on the slip after dark.
