Two roses on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person's upper thigh shows a tattoo of two open roses with layered petals and several leaves, stacked diagonally from the hip towards the knee. The design is drawn in fine black outlines with light grey shading on the petals and leaves. The background is a plain pale wall, with a blue floral fabric and black lace underwear visible beside the tattoo.

The bride's mother had counted the chairs three times, and still there was one more guest than there should have been, a tall man in a grey coat standing by the lychgate with his hat held to his chest. Nobody in Lowcombe knew him. Nobody asked, because a wedding was the one day the lane was allowed to be busy with strangers.

Two rose bushes had stood either side of the church path since the first Hollis and the first Aske were married there, one planted by each family, with a rule that neither could be cut back without the other. The old women said the roses bloomed only for couples who kept their word. Over the years the bushes had grown tangled, and their blooms were pale in dry summers and dark in wet ones. This year they were so full that the petals lifted off the stems like loose pages.

When the vows were said, the ring slipped from Tom Aske's fingers and rolled under the lychgate. He crouched to find it. Beneath the gate lay a single open rose, grey at the edges and fine-veined as if drawn with a careful pen, and the ring sat in its heart. The tall stranger had gone. Tom lifted the ring out, and the petals were dry as paper against his thumb.

Ruth Hollis put her hand on his arm and said her grandmother had always told her the roses only gave back what had been promised. Tom slid the ring onto her finger, and the second bush at the far end of the path opened all at once, pale as morning, with nothing to say whose it was.
