Black and grey roses on the thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large roses, one in full bloom and one partly open, with a smaller bud and several leaves, arranged as a cluster that climbs from the upper thigh towards the hip. The linework is dark and defined, with soft grey shading across the petals and leaves that gives them volume. The image is in black ink and greys, set against a plain white brick wall, with the subject cropped at the torso and thighs.

Your grandfather always said a rose at its height is a bad bet, because by the time anyone looks at it, it has already begun to let go. So you cut the stems at first light, while the dew still sits in the cups of the petals, and you carry the buckets down the lane with your thumbs pressed to the leaves so they don't bruise.

The show tent smells of cut grass and wet canvas. Three trestle tables run down the middle, and on the left, beside the jam and the marrows, Harriet Coombes has set out her cream hybrid tea like a bride on a cake plate. You have two roses in your jar: the full bloom, heavy as a fist, its outer petals curling back like the lid of a tin, and the half-open one beside it, its inner whorl still tight and shadowed. Behind them sits one bud, no bigger than a thimble, on its own green stalk, because your grandfather taught you to show what the plant promises, not only what it has done.
Mr Pryce comes at eleven with his magnifying glass and his tea going cold in the saucer. He lifts the full bloom, turns it, and sniffs. He moves on to Harriet's rose without a word, then comes back. Something about the way the light falls through the marquee flap makes the half-open rose glow, the shadows in its petals soft as pencil smudge, and he stands there longer than he needs to.
When the rosettes go up, the blue one is pinned to the full bloom and the red to Harriet's cream. The bud gets nothing. You walk home along the lane with the empty jar, the afternoon hot, and at the gate you find the thimble bud has come loose and fallen into your pocket. You hold it under the tap all the way up the path, and by the time you reach the kitchen its petals have begun, very slowly, to open.
