King and queen card tattoos on fingers
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are held together, showing small red tattoos of playing cards on the fingers. One finger has a red king with a heart motif, and the other shows a red heart and queen, drawn in simple solid red linework. The back of the hand on the left has grey and black script-style tattoos running over the knuckles and fingers, set against a dark fabric background.

Old Teodor kept a painted caravan at the far end of the Michaelmas fair, and in a tin box under his bunk he kept a deck of cards his mother had carried from over the water. Two of them, the king and queen of hearts, were red as the tent ropes and worn so soft at the corners that they bent like cloth.

Each season he dealt the cards to whichever child at the fair had the steadiest hand, and each season he took them back at closing time. One autumn a girl called Ines Harrow dropped the queen in the mud behind the dodgems, and by the time the lamps were lit it was gone. The king stayed in the box alone. Ines felt sick about it for weeks, so she walked the rest of the circuit with a second queen she had cut from a cereal packet, tucked inside her boot against her ankle, and nobody told her it wasn't the real one.
In November, at the winter fair in Walsall, Teodor laid the king out on the trestle for the boy who swept the stalls. Ines came in out of the rain, pulled off her boot, and set the paper queen beside it. Teodor looked at the two of them for a long time. Then he said the real queen had been lying under the dodgem platform the whole time, slipped into a rubber mat, and that he had found her that morning and kept her in his coat. He took her out and put her down. Ines moved the cardboard one aside with a single finger and left the two of them touching at the edges until the lamps went out.
