Arrow and heart on matching wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are pressed together with the fists facing the camera, and each carries a small tattoo. The left wrist has a thin black arrow pointing right, drawn in fine linework with little shading. The right wrist has a solid red heart of similar size, set against a warm, softly lit indoor background.

Marisol has been saying the arrow on the cargo bike points the wrong way since the spring, and every night you tell her it points where the bike is going, which is the whole point of an arrow. She laughs and leaves it alone. The bike is battered, the basket full of takeaway boxes still warm from the kitchens on Oldham Street.

At half eleven the city goes quiet in the particular way it does after the last trams. You take the Ancoats cut because it is shorter and because Marisol likes the water, the black canal bright with sodium lamps. She rides ahead, swerves to show off, then stops under the railway arch where the graffiti says nothing useful. She is waiting with a red glove hooked over the handlebar, the one she bought from a market stall for a pound and swears is lucky.
You reach her and she holds out a paper bag with two sausage rolls still warm through the grease. Someone has drawn a tiny red heart on the bag in biro, the way her nan used to mark the good ones. "Lost property," she says. "Yours." You don't ask where she found it. You eat half, hand her the rest, and point the bike towards the river, where the lights wobble on the water like something trying to decide.
