Two small footprint tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small solid black footprint tattoos sit on separate wrists, each showing a pair of prints with toes marked as small dots. The linework is clean and the ink is fully black, with no shading or grey tones within the designs. The photograph is black and white, with one wrist in the foreground and the other lower in the frame beside a hand pressed against it.

The guard at the Ruthven crossing wanted both passports open at once, so Ilse slid hers under the glass and kept her left hand flat on the counter. Beside her, Anders did the same with his right. Neither of them had planned it. Their grandmother had pressed their wrists into a saucer of soot the night before the coach left Varnau, then walked them to the gate in their socks, so that the prints would finish the road they had started.

The guard turned the passports over twice. He had the bored patience of a man who checked forty faces before lunch. Then his eyes dropped to the counter and stayed there. "Your grandmother?" he asked, not quite a question. Ilse nodded. He said his daughter had begged for the same thing last summer, and he had told her to wait until she was old enough to understand that some marks don't wash off.
He stamped both books and slid them back. Outside, the rain came sideways across the car park, and Anders blew on his wrist as though the ink might still be wet. It wasn't. The prints had been copied in a back room above a launderette in Grenvale the spring after the funeral, the artist working from a photograph of the soot, and the two small pairs of soles had sat on their skin ever since, facing the same direction.
