Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people lie in bed holding hands, with a small yin yang tattoo on the inner wrist of each. The left tattoo is an outlined yin yang with a dot, and the right is a solid black yin yang shape. The ink is black on skin, and the soft bedding and bare shoulders fill the background.

Morwenna pressed the file against the brass until it sang, then held the disc up to the lamp-room window to check the edge. Two checks, cut from one sheet at Gwilym's smithy the spring the new shaft opened, each with a notch where the other was meant to sit. Tomas had taken the dark one with him when the Cardiff train left on Monday, and she had kept the light one in the pocket of her oilskin ever since, so that every time her thumb found it she knew the other half was still out there.

Gwilym had inked them both the week before, with lamp black and a sewing needle heated over the forge. He drew a small swirl on the inside of each wrist, the place where the cage rope rubbed raw, and said a pair was easy to find if either one got lost underground. Tomas had laughed and said he was the one who always got lost, and she was the one who came up first. His swirl was solid black. Hers was only drawn round the edge, with a dot left in the middle, and he had argued all the way up the hill that this made hers the wrong way round.

The parcel came on Friday in a brown envelope with a Cardiff postmark. Inside was his half of the check, a chip out of its notch, and a note in his square capitals: THE EDGE WENT ON THE TRAIN. CAN YOU MAKE IT TAKE AGAIN.

She sat in the lamp-room long after the shift horn, working the brass a hair at a time until the notch would take the tooth of hers. When the two halves finally clicked together on the windowsill, the late sun came straight through the gap where they met and laid a bright thin line across the table.
