Two small green dots on a finger

Hand · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a thumb resting on a dark and white fabric edge, showing two very small green marks on the skin beside the nail. The marks are simple solid dots, with no visible linework or shading. The green ink is the only colour, set against the pale skin and the light and dark fabric in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on the tin roof of Tollgate Market since before seven, and Dilys Marsh had stopped hearing it the way she stopped hearing the kettle. Her first customer of the day wanted a navy serge skirt let down two inches, and she was pinning the hem on the stall's wooden counter when the bell over the door gave its tired little clang.

Arthur Pell had taught her the green marks years before, when she was sixteen and certain of everything. He kept a stub of chalk pencil in his waistcoat and put two dots at every seam he meant to find again. Start, he said, and stop, and a good tailor could find his way back into any garment in the dark. She had laughed at him. She did not laugh the morning they carried his coat out of the back room, still on its hanger, and she saw his two dots on the inside of the cuff.

Nobody had collected that coat in eleven years. The rain made the skylight drip into the bucket by the door, and Dilys took her seam ripper and opened the lining at those dots, slow as a surgeon. Folded flat behind the silk was a letter in Arthur's cramped hand, addressed to a woman in Hebden Bridge, never posted, with a postal order for four pounds tucked inside it.

She read it twice standing up, then sat down on the stool. The bell rang again and nobody came in. When the rain eased she threaded a needle with navy cotton, closed the lining neatly over the letter, and left the two green dots showing, because some marks are meant to be found again.
