Small wing tattoo on the side of a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a bare foot resting on a textured carpet, with a small wing tattoo on the outer side near the heel. The wing is drawn in thin black linework with minimal shading and a few feather details. The soft natural light and plain background keep the focus on the small tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Tennant had mended nets for thirty years and never once lost a knot she could not find again, so when the tern came down on the slipway with one wing folded wrong, she knelt on the wet stone and did not hurry. The bird let her lift it. Its wing was tangled in green line from the crab pots, and the feathers were as fine as pencil shavings where the wire had dragged them.

Behind her the harbour master was shouting about the tide. Mags ignored him. She worked the line free with the blunt hook she kept in her apron, one loop at a time, the way her mother had taught her to unpick a snarled mesh without tearing the twine. When the last strand came away the wing lifted, uncertain, then steadied, and the tern looked at her with one black eye as if deciding whether she was worth the trouble.

Then it went, low over the boats, and the only thing it left behind was a single grey feather stuck to her thumb. She carried it up the hill to Ada, who kept the stall with the pins and the ink, and asked her to draw it exactly, with nothing added. Ada laughed and said a feather was easy to draw, it was the lightness that was hard to get right.

Mags sat by the window while the needle hummed, and watched the afternoon light come off the water, and thought about how long a thing so small could keep the shape of the wing it had come from.
