Matching small creature tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small, matching tattoos of simple round-headed creatures with dot eyes sit on the inner forearms, one on each arm. The figures are drawn in thin, even black outline with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The close crop centres both arms, with the grey sweatshirt sleeves and body softly out of focus above.

The saw had already bitten halfway through the old Bramley when Tom noticed the two of them sitting in the cut, knees together, looking up at him with their dot eyes as if he were the one who had turned up uninvited.

They were no bigger than teacups, with heads as round as windfalls and legs folded under them like a pair of hares. Nobody in Lower Lugwardine had ever admitted to seeing them, though every grandmother in the parish had a story about them. You did not fell a tree with two of them sitting in its roots. You waited, you asked, and you left a saucer of cold tea at the base of the trunk for the wood to drink.
Tom set the saw down in the grass. He knelt, which his knees did not thank him for, and said the words his nan had taught him, which were mostly about the weather and a request for patience. The smaller one stood, tugged at the other's sleeve, and the pair of them toddled off into the hedge without a backward glance.
Forty years on, the orchard is gone and the hedge with it, and his grandson wants to know why the new fence bends around an empty patch of lawn. Tom tells him that some neighbours need a clear path home. He does not mention the cherry at the bottom of the garden, where two small figures sit at the roots each evening, facing the same way, exactly as they once did in the cut.
