A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stencil was meant for bolts of cheap silk, not for a heart, and Ida Brough knew it the moment she held the blade over it. Mr Pell had left the cutting room in a hurry that Friday with the lamp still burning, and on the bench lay a sheet of oiled card pricked full of leopard spots from a summer frock line the buyers had thrown out. Ida traced a heart over the spots with a stub of chalk, the way her mother marked hearts into bread dough, and began to cut.

Rose came in at six with her boots in one hand, dripping from the canal path, and found Ida kneeling on the boards with two hearts drying on the windowsill. 'Two?' Rose said. 'One for you, one for me. Mr Pell never counts the scraps. He only counts what he can sell.' They dabbed the spotted card with printer's ink from the back shelf, black as the water under the lock gates, and pressed their wrists to it one after the other, laughing at the smudges, until the kitchen clock said seven and their landlady began banging on the stairs.

Rose took the night train to Leeds in the spring, with a cardboard suitcase and a letter of introduction from the vicar. Ida kept the stencil in the drawer under her bobbins and did not take it out for almost a year. When she finally did, the card had softened at the edges and one spot had torn away entirely. She cut a fresh heart from the last clean corner, pinned it to the cutting room door, and left the ink tin open beside it for whoever came in next to find.
