Two snakes on the thighs

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in denim cut-off shorts and striped socks leans into a car, with her head turned away from the camera. Two coiled snake tattoos run down the backs of her thighs, shaded in black and grey with outlined scales. The warm, sunlit photo is taken from behind, with the car interior and blurred greenery framing the figure.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernathy had kept the two grass snakes in a biscuit tin since the spring the mill closed, and by August they had grown too long for it. Her grandson Owen found them coiled in the bottom of the tin one morning, mirror images of each other, and swore they had been fighting over the lid.

"They were never fighting," she told him, pressing a thumb to the tin's dented corner. "They were keeping time. Your grandfather used to say a pair of snakes never quarrel where a clock is ticking."

Owen did not believe her, but he carried the tin down the lane anyway, past the chapel and the dry duck pond, to the old lock-keeper's cottage where the river still ran brown and slow. The cottage had been empty for years. Inside, the floorboards were pale with dust, and the only furniture was a brass pendulum clock stopped at ten past four.

He set the tin on the sill and lifted the lid. The snakes uncoiled, slid across the wood in long grey ripples, and went straight to the clock as though it had called them. One curled round the pendulum rod. The other wound up the case and rested its head on the glass, watching the hands.

When Owen came back at dusk, the clock was ticking. The snakes were gone, and on the windowsill lay two shed skins, perfect as tracing paper, each one with its scales outlined in ink.
