Two small starburst tattoos on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two small eight-pointed starburst tattoos on smooth skin, one larger and lower left, one smaller and upper right. The linework is thin and crisp, with a slightly shaded centre and tapering points. The ink is dark brown to black, and the composition is a simple close crop with fine body hair visible across the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Queen of Caldrenmere had forgiven me for the tide tables, so when she sent for me at the second bell I expected only another quarrel about ink. Instead she unrolled a chart of the northern sky across the observatory flagstones and asked me which of the two wind-stars was the elder.

I had painted both myself, years before, when I was her cartographer's boy and the sea wind kept blowing my lamp out. The larger star sat low over the harbour and had always been the steadier, its eight points drawn with iron-gall so the centre shaded darker, like a coin left in water. The smaller one I had set near it as a joke, so the fishermen would have something to steer by when the big one hid behind the cliffs.

The queen tapped the smaller star with her thumbnail. 'It has moved,' she said. I told her stars do not move, not in the way she meant, and that charts are only our promises about where things were. She laughed, the first laugh I had heard from her in a whole winter, and said that was exactly what frightened her. Promises made in ink are the only kind that keep a kingdom honest.

We spent the night measuring. By the time the lamps guttered the smaller star had crept a finger's width toward its brother, and I understood that I had drawn the chart wrong, not the sky. I had set them too far apart on purpose, because I was afraid of how close they looked. At dawn I took the queen's pen and closed the gap by a hair, and the fishermen, who had always called the pair the Pilots, went out on the tide and every one of them came home.
