The snow had come in sideways since four, and Nell Harker could no longer see the top of the lane fence, only the lantern's wet orange ring on the drift. Her uncle had told her to keep the wall on her left and count the gates. She counted three and then lost count, because the wall had turned to a hedge and the hedge to nothing at all.

Her father had cut two stars into the cold-store lintel the year the shed went up, one large and one small, so anyone walking up from the barns in the dark would know which way was north without a torch. He'd done it with a nail and a mallet, not carefully, and said the stars were for his mother, who had crossed the fells on foot with nothing but a boot-scraped map. Nell had always thought it was a daft thing to carve on a barn. Tonight she wanted it badly.

She found the lintel by feel, fingers numb inside her glove, and the marks were there under the rime, the big star above and to the right of the small. She turned until the big one pointed at her shoulder, then walked toward the bleating, thin and furious, from the shed across the yard. Two ewes were down in the straw, and a third lamb lay still in the corner. She rubbed it with a handful of straw until it coughed and tried to stand.

By the time the light came grey over the ridge, the lamb was sucking at a hungry ewe, and Nell had scratched the two stars again into the damp plank beside the door, the small one a little crooked. Her uncle would say they looked like wasps. She did not mind. Something to walk by.
