Sit closer, the kettle's only just gone off and a story like this wants a warm room. You know why they call this stretch Sallow Row? Because of the sunflowers that grew over the wall of number nine, taller than the gasmen and nobody's planting. A bird dropped a seed one August, and after that the seed kept its own counsel.

Irene Pell kept the corner shop and watched that wall from her step every night. At eleven the lamplighter's grandson, Tomas Reeve, walked the length of the street with his pole over his shoulder, and every night the largest head turned after him, slow as a clock hand, until the morning sun pulled it back round. Irene swore it was the only thing on the street that ever kept proper time.

Then Tomas shipped out for the docks at Hull and didn't write. Irene kept the lamp lit in her window anyway, and in the autumn she cut the dried heads, shook out the seeds into a biscuit tin, and posted it to a hostel by the river where a man was said to be sleeping rough. The tin came back with one husk rattling inside and a note that said only, keep the flower facing east.

The next night at eleven the big head swung round toward the river, and it has been doing it ever since, though nobody on Sallow Row has the heart to tell the boy.
