Hummingbird tattoo on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with long dark hair, seen from behind in a black tank top, shows a small hummingbird tattoo on her upper back near the shoulder blade. The bird is shaded with soft gradients, with green, teal and brown plumage and a reddish throat, and its wings are spread mid-flight. The dim background of pale curtains and a patterned sofa keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The back door was propped open with a bread tin at ten past four, which is the only reason the bird got in. I was scoring a tray of tiger loaves when the air above the flour bins changed, a thin whirr like a kettle thinking about it, and then something no bigger than my thumb was hanging in front of the proving cabinet with its wings going so fast they were only a blur.

Dev, who was on the night shift with me that winter, said a bird in the bakery meant somebody's loaves would sell out before the nine o'clock bus. Hettie, who had owned the place before us and still came in on Sundays to complain about the rye, told me the same thing with more conviction and a slice of seeded batch in her hand. I did not believe either of them, but I did flap a tea towel at it, and the bird went straight past my ear, out through the dark, and I heard it tick against the window at the front of the shop.
I found it there, hovering at the glass where the oven light caught its throat. The red there flared and dimmed like a coal someone keeps breathing on. It was not trying to get out so much as trying to get back to something, and when I followed its line I saw the glaze pot on the sill, the sugar syrup gone cloudy and sweet in the cold.
I opened the back door fully and set the pot down on the step. It took the bird a long minute to decide, then it dropped past the bins and into the buddleia that grows out of the wall, which I had always thought was a weed. By six the glaze pot was a finger lighter and I had not said a word to Dev, who was already shouting about the rye.
