Mabel Corrigan had been up since three, and by half past she had stopped pretending the fox was not there. It sat on the flagstone outside the bakery's back door, tail curled round its feet like a banked fire, its red edges catching the lamplight from the oven window. Every morning it came for the heel of the day-old loaf, and every morning she flapped a tea towel at it for form's sake.

That morning it brought company. Down the lane from the mill pond came something long and blue, stretching itself over the cobbles as though it had slept in cold water and resented every minute of it. Its tail ended in a curl like a wave about to break. "Your cousin?" Mabel asked. The fox, which had not once in eleven winters answered her, looked at the newcomer and then at the loaves cooling on the rack, and said nothing at all.
The blue one wanted the cinnamon buns, not the heels. Mabel had a tray of them under a clean cloth for the christening at St Oswald's, and she told the pair that they could have one each if they carried the flour sacks in from the cart without splitting a single one. They did it, the fox hauling with its teeth and the blue one looping its tail round the corners, and by the end the yard was dusted white with their small paw prints.
When the bells struck six the tray was two buns short and the fox sat on the step cleaning its face with enormous dignity. The blue creature had already coiled itself against the warm brick beside the oven vent, its tail draped over the fox's back. Mabel counted the buns twice, shrugged, and left the door open a crack so the heat could find them.
