Two wolf heads and pink blossoms on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two canine heads stacked along the forearm, the larger upper head turned towards the viewer and a smaller head below it. Pink blossoms, orange leaves and green stems fill the gaps around the animals. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with warm browns and greys on the fur and clear highlights in the eyes.

Dear Tom,

The Pardoe menagerie came through on the 4.10 yesterday and I have been meaning to tell you about the wolves ever since. There were two of them in the goods wagon, the old dog Hob with his grey ruff gone white at the chin, and the young bitch they call Sorrel because of the colour her coat turns under the lamps. Mr Pardoe let me stand at the slats while he fed them. Hob looked straight at me the way Father used to look over his spectacles when I had lied about the coal.

Then the wagon was shunted into the siding behind the water tower and left there, and the porter said it would be a week before the next connection. Wild rose and foxglove grow thick along the cutting, and on the Tuesday Sorrel slipped her bolt and went up the bank into them. We found her at dusk by the signal post, nosing at a bunch of pink bloom as if someone had sent her to fetch it.

I did not tell Mr Pardoe where she had been. I walked her back along the sleepers with a bucket of oats, and she followed me like a dog, which I suppose is the trouble with wolves. Hob watched us from the slats and did not make a sound.

The wagon left for the east this morning and the siding is empty now, except for one pink petal caught in the bolt hole. I have pressed it inside the back cover of this letter so you can see it when it reaches you. Write soon and tell me Sheffield is not as grey as they say.

Your loving sister, Nell
