Realistic bat wrapped in its wing on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bat with large ears and dark, glossy eyes peers out from folds of its wing, with the wing edges wrapping around the lower part of the design. The shading is smooth and detailed, moving from deep blacks to soft greys to create fur texture and a sense of depth. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a forearm, with a small partial tattoo visible at the lower right edge.

The bat came down from the rafters of the granary the night the river rose, and it did not fly off when the water reached the threshold. It folded itself into the grey wool Ketu had been carding, drew one wing over its head the way a child pulls a blanket against a draught, and watched her with two eyes as wet and black as olives.

Ketu's grandmother said a bat that chose a house was a bat that would not be shaken out. So the family carried the looms up to the high room and fed the creature from their own bowls. It ate moths and scraps of dried fig. When the men waded down to the reeds to see what the flood had taken, it kept half its face hidden and peered out only when someone spoke gently, as if it were deciding whether the world was safe enough to look at.
The water went down in the month of harvest. Ketu carried the bat to the roof at dusk and held her arms open, but it would not leave the cloth of her sleeve. In the end she tied a strip of undyed linen around her wrist and let it sleep there. Her mother said nothing about the figs going missing.
Each evening after that, Ketu wound her shawl across her arm and walked to the well with the bat asleep in its folds, and the village learned to say good evening to the wool before they said it to her.
