UFO abducting a skeletal cow
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
A flying saucer with a domed cockpit and a row of portholes hovers above a dark pine forest, sending a pink tractor beam down onto a skeletal cow inside a triangular frame. Bold black outlines and flat areas of teal, pink, cream and grey give it a classic look, with black shading across the forest and ground. The collage shows the full design and two close-ups of the saucer and the cow.

The cow went up on a Tuesday. Ada Greaves knew it was Tuesday because she had counted the locks that morning, fourteen between Hollin Bridge and Stannet wharf, and written the number on the back of her hand. She was tying off the Patience at the lower gate when the light came down over Carr Wood, and she looked up in time to see the brindled heifer in the field above the towpath lift her head.

The thing over the firs was shaped like a plate turned upside down, with a glass cap where lamps moved about like fish. Along its belly ran a row of round windows, and from the middle a beam came down the colour of rhubarb. Mab, who had never hurried for anybody, walked into it as if it were a gate left open. The light took her legs first, then her back, and where it touched her the skin went clear and there was only the frame of her, ribs and hip and skull, lit like a drawing on slate.
Ada ran with the lantern and her husband's old boots. By the stile the saucer had risen a man's height and was turning slowly over the pines, and Mab rose with it, hooves folded under, looking down at Ada with mild surprise. Then the beam clicked off, the saucer slid east over the trees like a lid pushed along a table, and there was only the dark, the smell of hot metal, and the wet grass where the cow had stood.
Three weeks later Mab walked back along the towpath at first light, all bone and bright as a sixpence, and she gave no milk for a year. The farmer said she had come home lighter. The children at Stannet swear her hooves rang on the bridge cobbles. Ada never told anyone what she had seen, though she kept the number of locks on the back of her hand for a month, in case it mattered.
