UFO abducting a cat on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A flying saucer with a beam of light sits in a black night sky dotted with stars and a crescent moon, while a cat floats up the beam below it. The solid black background is contrasted with stippled dotwork in the beam and the shading on the saucer, and the design is shown from two angles. The tattoo is in black ink only, with the black sky shaped into a rounded cloud-like outline.

Dear Nell,

The cat went up the light last Tuesday, just after the lock at Hanwell closed behind us. I was at the tiller, your mother was below stirring the stew, and Biscuit sat on the coal hatch washing one back leg the way he does when he thinks nobody is looking. Then the whole towpath went white and humming, and there was a saucer hanging over the poplars, low enough to see its row of portholes glowing like a string of lamps.

I thought it was the council's fireworks gone wrong. Then Biscuit lifted off the hatch as if someone had taken him by the scruff, and he didn't scramble or yowl. He rose very dignified, tail straight out behind him, paws tucked up like he was crossing a puddle. Your mother dropped the ladle. By the time I'd got the boat into the bank the beam had gone out and the saucer was a single star above Greenford, with the moon the thin white paring it always is on clear nights.

The lads at the Bull's Head say it's the third cat taken off this stretch since spring. Mr Okafor from the narrowboat Wren swears his tabby came back with a silver collar that wasn't his. I have decided not to mention any of this to the insurers.

I've left a saucer of milk on the roof, just in case he's homesick. If you come up at Easter, bring your own tin opener. I have a feeling we'll be needing two.

Love, Dad
