Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A flying saucer hovers above a row of zigzag-edged pine trees, with a light beam falling from its underside. The saucer and trees are outlined in black linework and shaded with stippled dots, and the slogan THE TRUTH IS STILL OUT THERE is set in a bold lettering style around the top and right of a circular frame. The design is drawn in black ink on white with no colour.

Dev had been logging the lift faults on the fourteenth floor since March, and by October he had stopped pretending the list was about lifts. Mrs Okafor's aerial on nine, the boiler that sulked every Tuesday, the pigeon that kept getting into the bin store. Tonight the light came up over the pines beyond the bypass, a pale cone the colour of weak tea, and he stood on the walkway with his torch switched off and counted the seconds.

Kieran from flat 1407 came out in his school jumper, phone torch trembling. "That's them," he said, and it wasn't a question. Dev told him it was a helicopter. Kieran said helicopters don't hang still, and Dev had no answer to that. They watched the saucer, ribbed like a pie tin, its five lights blinking in turn, the trees below it black and sawtooth against the orange sky.

Behind them the lift chimed. It had been dead since Tuesday. The doors slid open on an empty car, and taped inside the panel was a sheet of A4 in a careful hand: THE TRUTH IS STILL OUT THERE. Dev knew the handwriting. It was his own, from the fault log, the same looping sevens he'd been writing for eleven years.

Kieran read it twice, then pulled a biro from his sleeve and wrote underneath, in capitals that sloped uphill: NEXT FLOOR. The lift doors closed, the number 14 flickered, and out past the bypass the beam went out like a switch being flicked.
