Unicorn cupcake with stars on the thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The design shows a frosted cupcake topped with a spiralled unicorn horn and yellow, pink and green stars, with a small unicorn standing on the cup. The bold black outlines are filled with pastel pink, purple, teal and yellow, and white and gold dots give a glittery speckled effect. Rainbow stripes run across the base of the cup, and the tattoo is centred on a fair-skinned thigh.

The fortieth cupcake went wrong at ten past five, when the piping bag split in my hand and a pink cloud of buttercream slid down the side of the unicorn I had been painting on the cup. Mrs Brannock's van was due at six. I had a horn that looked like a drill bit and a horse that looked like a dog that had been told about horses.

My nephew Sam wandered in from the back room in his football socks and asked what I was doing. I told him I was saving the afternoon. He studied the cake for a long time, then the glitter tin, then me. 'It needs more stars,' he said, which is what children say when they have decided you are not finished.
So I gave it stars. Yellow ones, pink ones, and a green one that Sam insisted was a frog. I dusted the frosting with edible glitter until the kitchen looked like the inside of a snow globe, then laid the rainbow stripes across the base in three bands, a little wonky, the way rainbows are meant to be. Sam held the box open while I tucked the cupcake inside, and it sat there catching the light like it had been waiting all day to be noticed.
The van came at ten to six. Mrs Brannock lifted the cupcake out, turned it slowly, and said nothing for so long that I began to apologise. Then she held it up to the window, the glitter flaring gold, and said, 'Oh, she'll never let me have a normal one again.' I have never been paid so well for a mistake.
