Unicorn and candy heart on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A cartoon unicorn with a rainbow mane, a pink bow and a striped lollipop sits at the centre of a large heart-shaped frame made of dotted candy-coloured beads. Surrounding it are conversation hearts, sparkles, sweets and a purple heart on a turquoise background. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading give the piece a bright, glossy finish.

I was sixteen and sorting the rock by colour, and I asked her what it was for.

She said it was for keeps. Then she pointed at the conversation hearts on the scales, the ones that said FOR KEEPS in blue letters so small you needed your glasses to read them, and went back to her crossword.
Every Saturday after that, a boy from the lifeboat house came in with coins in his fist and bought one striped lollipop. He stood under the top shelf, looking up at the rainbow mane and the pink bow, and never once asked for it. On the seventh Saturday I gave him the lollipop for nothing and told him the unicorn had been waiting for someone to notice it.
He came back the following week with his mother, who said he had been poorly all winter and had talked about nothing but the pony on the tin. Mrs Pardoe climbed the step stool, dusted the unicorn with her cardigan sleeve and handed it across the counter. Keeps, she said, and that was the only time I ever saw her smile at a sweet.
