UFO with rainbow beam on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a black and grey flying saucer with a red, yellow, green and blue rainbow beam beneath it, framed by four sparkle shapes. The words DO YOU THINK I'M SPOOKY are lettered in a circle around the saucer, and a partly visible banner with lettering sits above. The bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour are typical of traditional tattooing, shot close up on a striped sleeve.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the chip paper. Dolly Speke ran the coconut shy on Blackpool front for thirty summers, and the night the saucer came down she was up a stepladder changing a bulb, which is the only reason anybody believed her. It hung over the Tower at midnight, black as a dropped pan, with four little sparkles winking round it as if it was pleased with itself.

Well, the thing went quiet, and then it opened a beam, see, and the beam came down in stripes, red then amber then green then blue, and it landed on the sand right where the donkeys stand. Out of the light stepped a small grey gentleman in a bowler hat, holding a clipboard and looking very put out. He walked straight up to the coconut shy and said, 'Madam, I have been sent to survey your town for spookiness.' Dolly said she'd give him a free go if he'd stop mithering the gulls.
He looked at her a long while. Then he asked the question that had been bothering him across forty light years: do you think I'm spooky? Dolly looked at the bowler, the clipboard, the three-legged dog trotting at his heels, and said, 'Love, you're the least frightening thing I've seen since the council painted the railings.' He wrote something down. The saucer rose up in a fizz of colour and the beam folded itself away like a deckchair.
The council still say it was a flare. Dolly says it was a rating. Every Thursday since, a card has arrived at the shy, addressed in careful capitals, with a single gold star and the word ADEQUATE underlined twice.
