UFO over a cabin on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A flying saucer hovers over a log cabin and snowcapped mountains, set inside a downward-pointing triangle against a night sky of blue and purple stars. The saucer has grey shading and a green underglow, while the cabin roof and walls use bold green and brown with black outlines. The phrase I WANT TO BELIEVE is set in thin black capitals in an arc above the saucer.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dell Haskett had been telling the county sheriff for eleven years that the lights over Cutback Ridge were Forest Service flares, and the sheriff had been content to let him. So when the green glow came down behind the cabin on the Tuesday after the first frost, Dell didn't go outside. He sat at the kitchen table with his coffee going cold and watched the window turn the colour of pond weed.

The thing that came out of the light was not what he expected. It was smaller than he'd imagined, a grey saucer the width of a hay barn, rimmed with a row of portholes that glowed the same yellow as the lamp over his sink. It hung above the snowline without a sound. Then a figure in a long coat walked down a ramp of light and knocked on his door, politely, the way the insurance man used to.

"You've been very patient," the figure said. "We were told you'd want to see us properly."

Dell looked at the tin star on his wall, at the photograph of his late wife holding a trout, at the dog asleep by the stove that had not so much as lifted its head. "I wanted to believe," he said. "That's not the same as wanting you to come in."

The visitor smiled and produced a small brass key. "Then keep the ridge. We only needed someone who would tell the truth about it." The saucer rose, the portholes went dark one by one, and in the morning the frost on the step was unmarked except for a single careful footprint leading away, the wrong size for any boot Dell owned.
