Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of the inner forearm with the word Unbreakable written in a single continuous cursive script. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering slopes slightly upwards from left to right. The word is centred on the arm with soft out-of-focus fabric patterned with dark dotted shapes at the edges of the frame.

Sit down, sit down, the bread isn't going anywhere, and neither is your uncle, whatever he's telling you. Now, where was I? Ah yes. The teapot.

Nell Corran's mother had carried that teapot over from Cork wrapped in wool, blue glaze with a chip on the spout the shape of a sparrow. Nell was to pour the first cup from it on her wedding morning, for her husband. Then Davy Pryce, a clumsy lad who would tell you so himself, caught his boot on the hearth rug and down it went. Ten pieces on the flagstones. Everyone stood as still as church mice. Her mother went white and said nothing at all, which was worse than shouting.

Nell didn't cry. She knelt, gathered every shard, and laid them in a row on a clean tea towel like a jeweller sorting a broken necklace. Davy offered to fetch glue from the smithy. She said no. She sent him for a sheet of paper and a stub of pencil instead, and on the paper she wrote the word her grandmother always used when a thing had been through the fire and come out the other side. Unbreakable. She pinned it to the wall above the dresser so the whole house would see it.

Forty years on, that teapot is still in its pieces on the dresser, held together by nothing but habit. Nobody has poured from it since. Nobody needs to. Every morning someone in that house reads the word on the wall before they put the kettle on. Now, who's going to fetch the cake?
