The coal dust is still on you when the cage shudders up, and the lamp man is already shouting about the next shift, but you have something cupped against your chest. It is a spiral of pale stone, no longer than a thumb, and it came out of the seam between two bands of coal as neatly as if someone had set it there on purpose. Mr Pryce says it is a fossil, the shell of some drowned sea creature. Your nan says it is the horn of the unicorn that went below the village to breathe for the men when the gas came, and never climbed back out.
