Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon sea witch with white swept-back hair, a wide toothy grin and clawed hands clasping a glowing orb is the central subject, with dark curling tentacles around her. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with soft highlights on the face and hands. Turquoise, teal and purple wash in the background frames the figure against the curved surface of the leg.

The herring boats had come home short three nights running, and Tam Rowse stood on the slipway with his cap crushed in both fists, waiting for the sea to let him speak. Her cottage stood at the edge of the sea floor, roofed with black kelp, and rope-weed curled from every window like smoke that had forgotten how to rise. She did not get up from her chair. She only smiled, all teeth, and said, 'You have come to buy back a boat, Tam Rowse. Which one?'

Each name left his mouth and went blue-green in the lamplight, drifting across the room to her palm. When he reached his brother's name, Jory, his voice cracked, and the light flickered like a candle in a draught.

She stopped smiling. 'Who taught you to say Jory like that, as if he were already gone?' Tam had no answer. She opened her fist and let the light spill out over the water, and the sea lay flat as a dish. Next morning the Gannet came in under full sail with all nine men at the rail, Jory loudest of them, shouting at the gulls. Tam walked down to meet them. Behind him, under the kelp, something green and patient went on turning its pearl in the dark, counting the names it still wanted.
