Super Saiyan character on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo of an anime character with spiky golden hair, orange and blue clothing and a clenched fist raised toward the viewer, covering the upper arm and extending over the shoulder. The linework is bold and dark, with flat cell-style shading, and the hair uses layered yellow and brown tones. A purple wash sits behind the figure, and the background shows a black top and framed prints on a pale wall.

Pell had lifted the same white stone three times before noon, and three times he had hurled it over the wall into the lane. Each time it came back, rolled into the bean row as though the ground had sent it home. His grandmother, who kept the bees at the bottom of the orchard, said the stone was a gatekeeper and would only loosen its hold for someone who could keep a temper in one hand. Pell had no such hand. He had a clenched fist and a hot face, and he used both on the stone.

On the fourth morning the stone was still there, and a crow sat on the wall watching him. Pell set the spade under the rim and leaned, and as the blade bit he felt the anger that had lain under his ribs all winter climb up through his arms and out through his scalp. His hair stood up. The bees at the bottom of the orchard went quiet, and the crow dropped off the wall like a stone itself.
The white rock split with a crack like a branch in frost. Beneath it the earth was black and loose, the kind a gardener dreams of. Pell stood with his fist raised toward the sky, his gold hair bristling, breathing like a bellows. Then the heat drained out through his heels, and his hair sank back to plain brown and lay flat against his skull.
His grandmother came up the path with a bucket of honey water and looked at the split stone, then at him. "Now you know what the ground wants," she said, and handed him the spoon. He ate with his hand still trembling, and that afternoon he planted the beans with a steady palm, one seed at a time.
