Anime girl hugging a white dragon on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows an anime-style girl in a red outfit embracing a white dragon with a green-tinged mane, set against a blue sky with clouds. A second grey dragon curls in the background, and the figures are drawn with smooth outlines and soft shading. The bold, saturated palette of blues, greens, reds and browns fills the full composition, shown in two side-by-side views of the same arm.

The mud was still wet on my knees when the white dragon came down through the alders and asked me my name. I told him, because my mother had taught me that a river will take anything you refuse to give it. He lowered his great head until his mane brushed the reeds, and the green of it caught the light like wet leaves in April.

My brother Oto had gone under the weir three days before, and the village men had stopped looking. The dragon said the river had kept him for its own reasons, but a bargain could be struck if I asked properly. He wanted only my name in return, the one I had carried all my life. I did not understand then that a name given to a dragon is given for good. I pressed my face into his cold neck and promised.
We rose above the village into a sky so blue it hurt, past clouds the colour of milk. Behind us a grey dragon, older and slower, curled among the peaks and watched us go without a word. I held on to the pale scales and did not look down at the roofs, because my mother's red apron was knotted round my waist and I was afraid it would blow loose.
When we came back the river lay flat and calm, and Oto was sitting on the bank, shivering and furious, his shoes full of water. He called my name across the reeds. I opened my mouth to answer and found I could not remember what it was for, only that someone had once loved the sound of it. The dragon bowed and slid back into the cloud. I have been Nell ever since, and I still cannot say it aloud without thinking of him.
