X-Men couple and blue rose on a calf

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two comic-book X-Men characters embracing, one with white-streaked hair and the other in a long dark coat, with a pink energy glow behind them. A large blue rose with black and gold petals and red X emblems sits beneath the figures. Bold dark outlines, smooth colour fills and a vivid palette define the piece, which is photographed on a calf.

The glasshouse on Tallow Lane had been locked for eleven years, which was why Ines Carrow had been paid to open it. Rook held the torch steady while she worked the lock with a bent hairpin, his breath clouding in the cold, the pink light he kept sparking at his fingertips whenever he was nervous dimming to a low ember. "Still counting the minutes?" she asked. "Forty seconds," he said. "You're slower than last time."

Inside, the air was thick and sweet. The rose stood alone in a cracked stone trough, taller than either of them, its petals a blue so deep it looked wet. Gold edging ran along every one, and at the heart of each bloom sat a small red mark, like a seal pressed into wax. Ines had found it in a dead florist's ledger: the last cutting of a flower bred by a man who believed nothing should ever be planted twice.

Rook reached out first, the way he always did, and the glow flared up his arm until she caught his wrist. "Not yet." They had robbed worse people than the grower's heirs, but never anything still alive. The turn came quietly. She realised she did not want to sell it at all.

They took one cutting, wrapped in his coat, and planted it at dawn in the alley behind the bakery where they had first kissed in the rain. By spring the stem had split a dozen buds, and the light in his hands had gone out for good.
