Vader helmet and human face portrait on an arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A realistic tattoo shows a Darth Vader style helmet on the left half of the design, blending into a human face on the right with a yellow-green eye and dark spotted markings around it. Shading is smooth and detailed, with metallic highlights on the helmet and soft skin tones on the face. Red spots and dark smoky shading frame the subject, and the photo is a two-image collage with a close-up beside a wider view.

Nobody on Skerrow Quay wanted the helmet, so Dilys Pascoe gave it to me for the price of a pint. It came up in her trawl in March, black as a kettle and twice as heavy, its visor crusted with barnacles and one side freckled with rust the colour of dried blood. I carried it to the forge behind the net loft and set it on the anvil, where it sat watching me the way the ferryman does when he is counting coins.

I scrubbed it for a month, first with a wire brush, then vinegar, then the slow work of a dental pick. Under the grime ran a row of rivets and, scratched inside the brow where only a hand could reach, the name Tobias Merrin, lamplighter, 1931. In the chapel hall the old men keep the parish ledgers, and Ivo Penhallow remembered him: a man who rowed out to the Hake Rock light every night in fog and came back every morning with his eyes fixed on the water.

On the last night of February the storm came up the channel exactly as the forecast had promised. I heard the foghorn at Hake Rock stutter, one blast, then nothing. I fitted a disc of old lantern glass behind the visor slit, lit the forge until the iron went orange, and set the helmet on the step with the bellows wheezing into it. The glass caught the firelight and burned green-gold through the fog, the way a lamp does through rain. Three boats found their way in on it before midnight, Ivo's among them.

The Hake Rock light has been turning properly since, and the helmet sits on my workbench with its red spots polished bright. When the sea thickens I carry it down to the harbour wall and hold it up to the dark, and I wait for an oar to knock against the steps.
