Dear Tom, I'm writing this at the kitchen table with the back door open, because the harbour has gone quiet the way it does after midnight and I wanted to hear the gulls stop. Mrs Adair says she saw it again off the breakwater, the blue one, sitting on the bollard with its goggles pushed up on its forehead like a man resting between shifts. I told her she'd had too much of the sherry from the Lodge. She didn't laugh.
