Venus symbol and waves on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the back of a person's neck, with short brown hair falling above the tattoo. A thin black Venus symbol sits above a row of three connected wave lines, both drawn with even, delicate linework. The ink is solid black against pale skin, and the kitchen shelves and bottles in the background are out of focus.

Down at Saltcombe the old schoolhouse had a bell that rang for every ending, and when the class of sixty-one came back for their fiftieth year, nobody could agree who had been the cleverest. Maud Tirrey said it was the girl who sat by the window and drew boats in the margins of her sums. Her name was Ada Penhale, and she had gone to sea at sixteen on her uncle's herring boat and had not been seen on land since.

At the reunion the hall smelled of vinegar and wet coats. Maud found a copper token pressed between the pages of the old attendance register. It was stamped with the sign for love, a circle with a small cross beneath it, the same mark the lamp-keeper had scratched above the harbour door. Her grandmother had told her the sign belonged to the sea, that any girl who carried it would never drown unless she asked to.

Ada came in late with salt on her coat and three waves inked along the inside of her wrist, the blue gone soft at the edges. She did not sit down. She said she had only come back to return what was owed, and she held out her hand for the token. Maud refused, because nobody had ever told her what was owed or to whom.

So they walked down to the slip together at the bottom of the tide. Ada took the token, bit it once as her uncle used to, and threw it where the third wave broke. The water closed over it without a sound. Behind them, in the empty schoolhouse, the bell rang once, though no one had touched the rope.
