Rose within geometric frame on an inner arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded black and grey rose sits at the centre of a thin geometric design of a circle, overlapping triangles and a small diamond shape. The linework is fine and crisp, and the petals use soft grey shading for depth. The tattoo is centred on the inner arm against a pale, plain background, with the torso and dark underwear partly visible.

The chart had gone soft at the folds, and Mairead Tulloch would not let anyone else unroll it. Her grandfather had drawn it on sheepskin the winter the Gannet went out past the skerries and did not come back. Inside a ring of thin black lines he set three triangles, one pointing to the pole, and at the heart of them a rose, shaded so deep the petals looked wet.

The island women said the rose was for luck and the arrow was for the wind. Mairead said nothing. She had watched her grandfather rule those lines with a steel edge and a candle, and she knew that a rose was the old name for the card on a compass, the star that told a man which way was home. Every boat out of Skerrow carried one stitched into its sail, and every child was taught to find it before they were taught to swim.
When the fog came down in March she took the Morag out alone, with the chart lashed under the thwart and a scrap of lodestone in her oilskin pocket. She steered by the tap of the stone against the iron rowlock and the shadow the rose threw on the water. The hours went by. The cold got into her fingers and then into her knees. At last the fog lifted like a sheet off a line, and there was the Gannet, grey and whole, riding at her old mooring in the bay below the church.
The boat was empty. Her grandfather's coat hung from the mast, and under the rose on the sheepskin, freshly scratched, was a small arrow pointing back the way she had come. Mairead folded the chart along its soft creases, tucked it inside her jersey, and turned the Morag for home, and the arrow stayed true the whole way in.
