Video game icons tattooed on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A hand with black nail polish rests on a dark blue cola can, showing small tattoos on the fingers. The icons include a yellow star, a green mushroom, a red mushroom and a pale round item, drawn with dark outlines and simple flat fills. The mixed colours stand out against the blue can, and the close crop keeps the focus on the fingers.

The arcade on Vicar Lane shut at eleven, but I kept the back room lit until the last bus went past the window, because the Kestrel cabinet was still dying and nobody else in Leeds knew how to coax it back. I had the side panel off and a fag burning in the ashtray Mo swore he'd emptied in March. Rain ticked against the shutter. Every few minutes the sign outside buzzed, and the whole room flickered orange, then went back to blue.

The tin of spares lived on the shelf above the solder. Inside were the things Mo kept for luck: a yellow star enamel pin, a green mushroom sticker gone soft at the edges, a red mushroom button with a chip out of its cap, and one pale round token that opened no door in the city. He'd given me the tin the week before he moved to Bristol, and said, 'When the star comes up, you get three seconds where nothing can touch you. Use them to run.' I'd thought he meant the game.

At half past one the Kestrel cabinet coughed, found its voice, and the attract screen came up with that tinny little tune. The star sprite spun in the corner, bright as a warning. I reached for the power switch to kill it, then stopped, because the cabinet was unplugged and the screen was still glowing. My thumb was on the cold button of the red mushroom. Three seconds, I thought. I pocketed the pale token, left the shutter an inch open for the rain, and walked out into the wet street, where the sodium lamps hummed the same note as the title screen.
