Seek script tattoo on the wrist

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo spells the word seek in flowing black cursive script, with a long tapering stroke extending beneath the letters. The linework is smooth and even, and the ink is solid black with no visible shading. The hand is raised against a plain pale background, with the tattoo sitting in the lower part of the frame and the nails, one with a small blue TARDIS design, above it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair pulled out of Dunmere at four in the morning, and I was still tying down the canvas on the hoopla stall when Grandad Abe leant against the blue box and told me to stop fretting. He had painted SEEK across the top of the booth himself the spring before, in a looping hand he swore he'd learned from a sign-writer in Hull, and nobody in the fair had ever asked what it meant. Everyone assumed it was for the fortunes.

Inside there was a card table, two chairs, a lamp with a cracked shade, and a tin of sixpences nobody had counted since the war. Abe said the box was older than the fair, that he'd hauled it out of a Leeds scrapyard on the back of a lorry with no engine, and that it hummed if you stood still long enough. I believed him the way you believe anything at five years old. At seventeen I still half believed him, the year my mother's postcards stopped coming from seaside towns and started coming from places I'd never heard of.

The night before we left, I asked him where a person went to find someone who had walked off the edge of the map. He tapped the lamp, then the glass, then pointed up through the skylight at a sky full of spangled cloud. "You don't look down the road, love," he said. "You look for the bit of you that's still going out."

I took the booth key off its nail, left the lamp burning and the door open to the empty field, and climbed into the back of the last lorry as it reached the slip road. Somewhere behind us the word SEEK stayed painted on a booth nobody had bothered to tow.
