Pizza slice tattoos on middle fingers
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are held up with the middle fingers extended, and each middle finger carries a small pizza slice tattoo. The slices show red pepperoni, orange cheese and brown crust, with simple shading and clean outlines. The tie-dye fabric behind the hands adds bright pink, purple and blue tones to the composition.

By half past one there was only one slice left in the tray, and Nell had been counting it since midnight the way other people counted sheep. Her van sat under the dead streetlamp at the end of Carrow Street, hatch glowing orange. Across the road, Dev's chip shop was fogged up to the top of the window, and he kept wiping a clean patch in the glass so he could glare at her through it.

They had not spoken since the Tuesday the council lorry took Dev's bollard and half his awning. Nell swore she had never shouted "mind the cheese" at the driver. Dev swore he had seen her lean out of the van with the face of a woman who would never say sorry. Both of them were right, which made everything worse. Years ago, after a bet about a dare and a bottle of cheap prosecco, they had each had a slice of pepperoni inked on the middle finger, matching, a truce nobody had asked for.
At quarter to two a lad in a borrowed shirt wandered between the two stalls, swaying, and offered twenty pounds for the last slice. Nell looked at Dev. Dev looked at the lad, then at the twenty, then at Nell. Nell reached into the tray, lifted the slice with the tongs and put it in a paper sleeve, and handed it over without a word.
Dev waited until the lad had gone, then raised his hand over the wet tarmac and held up his middle finger, the little inked slice catching the orange light. Nell did the same from her hatch. They stood there like that for a while, two grown adults saluting across Carrow Street, until Dev shook his head and crossed over with two cups of tea and the twenty folded in half, one half for each of them.
