Inside the lid, under a strip of brown parcel tape, I found a cassette with handwriting on the label: Hall, last dance, don't record over. I should have left it alone. Instead I fed it into the deck, which took three goes and a bit of pencil in the spindle, and I turned the volume down low so the empty hall only had a hiss to fill it.

Then the singer, near and tired, saying, 'That one's for Ruth, if she's still at the bar.' I looked up. The floor was bare and freshly varnished, but I could hear shoes on it, the old shuffle of heels turning on a packed floor.

I let the track run to the end. The tape finished on a long breath of applause, and the counter clicked to zero. I pressed rewind and watched the little wheels turn the whole night back to the beginning, so the next person to find it would hear it too.
