Video game mushroom and castle on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a pixel-art green 1-up mushroom with red hearts above it, set against blue radiating rays. Gold pixel coins, red and green shapes, and several bullet bills fill the rest of the design, with a grey castle silhouette at the base. Bold outlines and flat, saturated colour are used throughout, and the design wraps around the upper arm with a black and grey tattoo visible on the other arm at the left edge.

The cabinet came into the shop on a flatbed from Hull, its side panels swollen and the joystick stiff on its shaft like a loose tooth. Dev wanted it humming by Friday, his mum's sixtieth, and he kept tapping the glass as if the screen might wake faster for it. I told him the board was sound and the trouble was the speaker, which was true, though I did not mention the paint tins I found stacked behind the coin door.

Under the tins was a ring of brass tokens gone green at the edges, eleven of them, each with a thumbprint pressed into the metal from years of being fed into a slot. I soaked them in vinegar on the bench while the radio murmured about the cricket. Someone had loved this machine, and someone had stopped. The marquee above the screen had lifted at one corner, so I peeled it back and found the mushroom painted underneath, a little green cap with white spots gone the colour of old teeth.
I spent Thursday night with a fine brush and enamel, matching the green from a sample I scraped off the frame. When I touched up the spots they flared bright enough to look wet. Dev had told me his mum reached the castle on her first coin, long before he was born, and she still talked about the bullet bills as if they had personally insulted her.
On Friday she stood at the cabinet with a pint of stout and pressed start. The tune came up thin and familiar. She laughed, a short bark, then went quiet and fed a token from her purse into the slot. I left them to it and went out to the van, where the sky over Holloway had turned the colour of a bruise under the sodium lights. Behind me the coins chimed, one after another.
