Pixelated creeper face on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A pixel-art creeper face made of green, olive, pale yellow and teal squares sits on a black block-shaped background with a grey-green stepped border. The blocks are cleanly shaded with flat fills and subtle lighter tones, giving a three-dimensional, stacked look. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a leg, shot straight on against a bright, blurred background.

The corridor on Ward Seven is laid out in squares, cream and grey, and after midnight you start counting them because counting keeps you awake. Forty-two tiles from the lift to the linen cupboard. Mr Okafor in bed nine has been asking for his tea since eleven, the kitchen hatch is shut, and so you have taken the long way past the family room, where the vending machine hums like it is weighing its options.

That is when you hear it. A hiss, low and wet, from somewhere behind the sluice door. You have heard the pipes do plenty of things, but not that. You stop and hold the empty mug in both hands, and you wait. The hiss comes again, closer, and the ceiling panels flicker one after another in a grid, each square winking off as if something is creeping along above you tile by tile.

You know what it is before you turn round, because Dev, the porter, has spent three weeks at the desk playing a game where a green, blocky creature sneaks up on you and then goes off like a firework. He swears the noise is exactly this. You turn slowly. There is nothing in the corridor but a mop bucket and a trolley of clean sheets, and then the sluice door swings wide and Dev steps out, grinning, with a sachet of sugar held up like a trophy.

"Thought I'd finally get you," he says.

You take the sugar, tell him he is banned from the vending machine, and carry the tea down to bed nine. On the way back the lights settle into their squares again, forty-two of them, cream and grey, and you count every one.
