Video game sleeve on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A full arm sleeve shows cartoon video game imagery, including clouds, a question block, a small white ghost figure, a green pipe with a red piranha plant rising from it, and a pink and yellow starburst design lower down. The outlines are bold and the shading is flat with solid fills, giving a graphic, cartoonish look. Bright colours such as blue, green, red and yellow dominate against a blurred street background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in the Harrow Lane flats had ever seen the pipe stop dripping, so when Ruth Okafor knelt at the boiler cupboard and heard it gurgle politely like a kettle deciding something, she knew the trouble was not water. Her grandfather had told her about the green pipes that ran under the city, the ones the old plumbers swore were older than the buildings. Don't stick your face near them, he said, and whatever comes up, don't offer it a biscuit.

The thing that came up was red and shaped like a tulip that had been to a bad party. Its teeth clicked. Ruth had a spanner in one hand and a torch in the other and very little sense, so she did what her grandfather would have done and talked to it in the voice she used on the council. 'You can't be here. There's paperwork.' The plant considered this, swayed, and then shot a fine silver spray at the ceiling, where a damp patch shaped like a cloud bloomed and promptly fell asleep.

Behind the cupboard door, something pale drifted through the plaster the way fog goes through a fence. It was the size of a tea towel and seemed mostly embarrassed. Every time Ruth looked straight at it, it covered its face with both hands and hid. She understood then. Nothing down there liked being watched, which was why the pipes had always been so quiet.

She turned her back, filled the kettle at the sink, and waited. Twenty minutes later the plant sank back down the green throat with a noise like a sulky drain. The pale shape rose, looked at the kettle, and sighed. Ruth made two teas and left one on the cistern lid. In the morning the cup was empty, and a yellow box marked with a question mark had appeared on the joist. Inside was a brass washer, bright as a coin, and a note in careful capitals: SORRY ABOUT THE FOG.
